Some people believe that it is wrong to keep animals in zoos, while others think that zoos are both entertaining and ecologically important. Discuss both views.

Although a section thinks of society that keeping animals in the zoo is cruel, the rest of the echelon believes it is a good way of entertainment and economic growth. This essay will discuss both the given viewpoints in the subsequent paragraphs.

At the outset, let us shed some light on the reason why wild animals should not be kept in zoos. First and foremost, animals find difficulty in roaming because of the narrow space in the cage. To explicate, if animals are kept in cages, they are unable to roam properly and would not be able to have fresh air as well as chase other animals. As a result, they feel stressed, and their growth will be affected. Additionally, when animals are kept in captivity, they would lose their ability to fight and hunt other animals. To go deeper, when animals return to the wild, they feel catching the prey is difficult because they do not get an opportunity to apply their abilities in the zoo. Therefore, they lack their hunting skills for survival. To cite an example, research conducted by Harvard University in 2012 stated that 20-30 per cent of wild animals had died because they could not catch prey when they returned to the wild.

Moving towards the opinion of those who think that keeping animals in zoos is beneficial. First and foremost, zookeepers provide special care to wild animals to grow well. To elaborate, zoos help protect wild animals from predators and keep them in a safe space. Due to development in nature, many animals have lost their habitat, and there is a danger of extinction. To protect the animal, the zoo plays a vital role. Apart from this, the zoo also provides an opportunity to learn the behaviour of animals. To substantiate, visitors visit zoos in large quantity to understand the behaviour of animals. Moreover, to feel relaxed or have fun, some people visit the zoo with their children,, which is a great source of income. For example, Mr Benjamin Bradley, editor of the Washington Post, in his editorial in Jan 2016 on keeping animals in zoos, stated that 50% of individuals visit zoos so that they can learn about the nature of wild animals.

To encapsulate, it can be concluded that some people believe that animals should not be kept in zoos because they lose their ability to hunt and feel stressed, whereas others suggest that animals should be kept in zoos due to the fact that keeping animals in a zoo is a great source of income and entertainment.
