Sample Answer: Talk about your favourite beverage/drink

Here I’m going to talk about a traditional spiced tea popular in India, namely Masala chai is a drink that I adore. To make it extra rich, it add black tea, milk, and spicy ingredients such as ginger, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. The flavours are great not just the taste but also the sensations, and that is why I tend to lean towards a cup of chai most times of the year.

I usually prepare masala chai at home, usually, to be able to control the ingredients and the proportions. It is pretty straightforward: I heat water with tea and spices, let that cook, then mix in milk and sugar. Everything takes about ten minutes, and the smell wafting from the kitchen throughout the entire brewing is worth the wait. However, when I am outdoors, I often find it easier to grab a cup from the local tea stalls, which is the case on long road trips or busy mornings.

This drink is one of my favourites because it has such deep emotional value. It takes me back to my childhood, where I am surrounded by my family, and we sit together in the evenings over chai and share stories, and laughter. And even now, especially on cold days, a hot cup of masala chai does feel like a warm hug. Additionally, the ingredients in the tea are thought to be healthy as well, with some people claiming that it helps with immunity and digestion.

For me, masala chai is more than just a drink; I don’t look at it as a beverage but rather a tradition or something that always puts a smile on my face no matter how my day is going.

Part 3 Questions

Question 1:- What do you think are the risks or health issues involved with the consumption of certain drinks/ beverages on a daily basis?

Let’s start with the most obvious one: Water. It is crucial when it comes to hydration and it aids all body processes making it the best drink. Tea specifically green or herbal tea, does contain antioxidants which promote immunity and help combat stress, however, too much caffeine may also be harmful leading to sleep disorders. Coffee makes people feel more energized, helping with cognitive functionality but too much consumption can lead to anxiety.

Question 2:- What strategy can I apply when selecting a drink while eating food or socializing?

Well, healthy drink options can include water but also less sugary drinks such as herbal teas or natural juices when necessary. Soft drinks and sweetened drinks could be avoided as they provide nothing but empty calories.  Also, looking at the ingredient list can be useful, especially looking for hidden sugars or other artificially processed substances.

Question 3:- Do you find it more refreshing to have a hot drink or a cold drink as the temperature does seem to have some impact on the health-beneficial aspects of the drink?

The answer to this question will depend on one’s preference and the context in which the drink is consumed. However, warm drinks such as tea or hot water are believed to have a therapeutic effect which helps in the digestion of food and aids the body after meals. Additionally, warm drinks can be ideal during cold weather as opposed to cold beverages which are more refreshing and can be very good for people looking to quench their thirst during summer. For these warm drinks, however, moderation is likely the key as any very hot drink when taken regularly has the potential to damage the throat or relationships.
